Abstract
22,928. Blaisdell, B. H. Oct. 17. Generating combustion products under pressure. - Apparatus for generating combustion products for use in connexion with gas turbines &c., of the type comprising an elongated combustion chamber surrounded by a water-jacket, and having valves automatically operated by the varying pressure in the chamber, is provided with means for allowing steam and water to enter after each explosion. The valves are provided with cushioning-apparatus to prevent concussion. The tubular combustion chamber 2, having an igniter 5 at the outlet end, is provided with a jacket 6, having a steam dome 7. Two valves 18, 19 admit steam and water to the chamber, and the rear valve 18 has a cushioning-piston 21. A steam-pipe 28 connects the steam-dome 7 to the space behind the valve 18, and a branch pipe 29 enables steam from a boiler heated by the waste heat from the turbine to be used, when required. A pipe 30 serves to admit water spray. An air-pipe 34 connects the casing of the air-valve 13 with the cylinder 22 in which the cushioning-piston 21 works. Air and gas under pressure are admitted by the valves 13, 16, having dash-pots 14, 17, to the combustion chamber, the rear valve 18 being at the same time kept closed by the air pressure acting upon the piston 21. When the charge reaches the outer end of the chamber 2, it is fired by the igniter 5, the valves 13, 16 being closed by the increased pressure, the valve 19 being at the same time closed, and the valve 18 opened. As the pressure in the combustion chamber falls, the valves 18, 19 move slowly forward under the action of the piston 21, at the same time admitting steam and water spray, which serve to drive out the combustion products and cool the combustion chamber. The ignitions take place at interval regulated by the requirements of the engine.
