Abstract
22,406. Arnold, S. Oct. 11. Suspended vehicles.-In means for transferring passengers' luggage &c. in railway stations in which a carriage travels on elevated tracks extending the length of the platforms, the carriages, Fig. 3, are each propelled by a motor driving a shaft 6 carrying a sliding clutch member 10 normally engaging a loose pinion 7 driving the track wheel 15. Hinged members s, t, normally in alinement with the rail, can be projected at the place where it is desired to stop the carriage, by a sliding rod u operated from a central control station to engage a sliding part 17 connected to the clutch lever 16. The clutch is thus disengaged. At the same time an arm 39 integral with the part 17 engages the tail of a retaining-pawl 41 and allows the load rope to run off the drum or sheave 23 under the control of a brake 25. To lift the load, a bar 32, Fig. 4, is raised by pulling a cord so as to elevate a pinion 31 on a vertically moving frame 28 into mesh with a continuously-running pinion on the shaft 6 and a pinion 27 integral with the drum 23. At the same time, a stop 44 is raised to prevent engagement of the clutch 10 should the members s, t be retracted. The luggage is carried in a cage attached to the cable, swinging being prevented by telescoping tubes or girders attached to the cage and to the carriage frame. In a modification, both wheels on one of the axles of the carriage are driven.
