Abstract

21,722. Maxim, Sir H. S. Oct. 2. Projectile fuses.-Relates to bombs provided with a winged tail tube and intended to be dropped from aeroplanes, and consists in providing the detonator charge, which normally lies in the tail tube or in a front tube, with a rod which, after the release of the bomb, brings the detonator into the firing position within the bomb during flight, or on impact, and also fires the fuse on impact. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the bomb a<3> is released from the catch b<3> c, the rod d' is released from the pin b and gravitates in advance of the bomb, the motion of which may be retarded by a canvas parachute attached by cords d<5>. On impact, the rod d' drives the detonator a against a firing-pin c<1>, which has slipped in position behind the rod as shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, the detonator lies in a front tube, and the rod is made of a number of telescopic sections which extend out during flight.
