Abstract

Casting-machines; casting processes. - In apparatus for casting under pressure, the pressure is suddenly released to produce a partial vacuum for sucking back the molten metal in the nozzle. The vacuum may be increased by connexion to a vacuum pipe. The bath of metal may be heated internally by means of electrodes d, d<1>, and inert or other gas is introduced by means of a pipe g and valve i, a second valve k being operated to reduce the pressure at the time that the valve i is closed. The tube e through which the metal is forced to the mould may be of the form shown so that a part of the metal which solidifies in the pipe may be withdrawn as a lug attached to the object cast. The sudden release of pressure afforded by opening the valve k may be utilized in the production of hollow castings by the withdrawal of the still liquid centre of the casting.
