Abstract

21,161. Pitt, W. Sept. 25. Jib cranes.-Horizontal traverse of the load is effected during luffing by means of epicyclic gearing. The jib a is pivoted at g to the standard b, and is balanced at c. Luffing is effected by means of a link d pivoted at one end to the standard and at the other end to a nut e traversed along the jib by a screw f. The screw is rotated by the luffing-motor o through bevel-gearing and a vertical shaft j. The hoisting-motor v drives the hoisting-drum u, which is loose on its shaft, through a bevel-wheel t, planet pinions r, and a bevel-wheel s fixed to the drum, the planet-carrier q being normally held fast by the luffing-gear, which may be braked. When the luffing-motor is operated, it also drives the hoisting-drum through spur gearing p, q, and the bevel-gearing r, s, the wheel t being stationary. The proportions of the gears are so arranged that the hoisting-line is wound in or paid out at such a rate as to traverse the load horizontally.
