Abstract

20,922. Ziegler, J. J., and Esch. J. Sept. 21. Driving, starting, and stopping arrangements; leno and like motions. - In making slat-and-wire fabrics for plastering purposes, garden fencing, mats, &c., the slats are placed on tension wires and connected thereto by binding-wires which are wound round the slats and then round the tension wires several times in the position of rest; the tension wires are then advanced and the binding- wires again wound several times round them. The tension wires 2 are fed from drums 1, under tension rollers 3, through hollow shafts 5, which carry spring-regulated coils 6 of binding- wire 7 and are mounted in laterally-adjustable supports to vary the distance between the tension wires. The tension wires pass through hollow pins 5 and the binding-wires through hollow pins 9 on cranks 8. Members 10, 10 for guiding the binding-wires and maintaining by friction the tension thereof to prevent formation of loops are provided on both sides of the pins 5, 9. The slat 12 is placed on the tension wires in front of the members 10, 10 when in the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 8, and the members are then moved to force the slat into the joint and to release the pins by a bar 11 engaging therewith and operated by bars 19, rollers 19, and wedgeshaped bars 18 from a pedal lever on a shaft 16. The pedal lever, on further depression, moves the clutch member 22 into engagement with the member 22 on the loose pulley 26 through levers 20 and forked lever 21. The lever 21 carries a projection, which is held by a spring in contact with a disk 24 on a countershaft 27 driven from the shaft 25 by removable reduction gearing 29, 28, the clutch being disengaged when the projection enters a recess in the disk. One or more recesses may be provided according to the number of turns desired. The shafts 5 are rotated by bevel-gear 4, 4, the pinned transporting-roller 14 by a ratchet 33, rod 32, and crank-disk 30 on the shaft 27, and the winding-roller 15 by a belt 35 on a pulley 36, which is pressed by a spring 38 against a friction disk 39 on the roller shaft. The slats may be attached alternately on opposite sides of the tension wires.
