Abstract

20,380. Schwab, K. Jan. 11, [Convention date]. Leading-in wires; making lamps. - A lamp having leading - in wires passing through the sides instead of through a stem is made by placing the wires 5, Fig. 4, previously attached to a filament, across the open neck of a bulb, lowering a tube 6 on to the neck so as to grip the wires, and then heating the joint to unite the parts and seal-in the wires; the tube 6 may then be contracted above the joint, to facilitate sealing - off the lamp after exhaustion. The parts or the fusing-blowpipes may be revolved, or a large number of stationary burners may be used. Fig. 4 shows the lamp held by sliding jaws 2 in a ring 3, but preferably the apparatus used is that shown in Fig. 6. In this arrangement, a bulb is held on its seat by a ring h, connected to a spring-pressed block d slidable inside the apparatus by a handle f to release the bulb. The same handle operates by a wedge a pair of gripping-jaws p, q carried bv concentric tubes and holding a slidable carrier r for an exhausting - tube. Compressed air can be introduced through passages in the apparatus to the tube, to prevent collapse of the fused parts, packing being provided between the tube and its carrier. The apparatus is mounted on an horizontal pulley a for revolving it between blow-pipes, and can be raised and lowered by a hand-lever b. In modifications, the bulb instead of the tubes is movable vertically, or both parts can be moved when gripped.
