Renewable calks. - Protective studs d for soles and heels, stated to be applicable also to horseshoes, have rounded ends, forming the actual wearing parts, connected by shank portions to plates e, which are secured to the sole or heel by being inserted in slots b in a metal plate a attached to the sole or heel. A flange c is formed on the edge of the plate, thus leaving a space between the plate and the hoot to permit movement of the plates e. The studs d are held in place by screws f which pass through blocks a on the plate a and bear against blocks e<1> on special studs which are inserted last. The studs are inserted through a widened part b<1> of the slot b. In a modification, Fig. 5, a pad g provided with projecting headed pins e<2> is similarly secured to a plate attached to the heel, the pins sliding in slots b. The pad is held in position by a locking-piece similarly secured and with its pins e<1> held at the narrow end of slots b by screws f.
