Abstract

20,034. Nixon, F. H. Sept. 8. Reciprocating-saw machines.-An apparatus for cutting peat &c. into shaped pieces comprises a cutting - device which is reciprocated simultaneously in two directions in the same plane. As applied to the cutting of peat blocks into corrugated pieces adapted to fit together as shown in Fig. 4, the invention comprises a cutting-frame 7, Fig. 1, which is reciprocated vertically within an horizontallyreciprocated frame 10. The frame 7 is fitted with cutters 11 consisting of fine saws or roughened wires and is operated by a crank 5 on the shaft 1. A shaft 20, driven from the shaft 1 through worm gearing 18, 19, Fig. 1, is fitted with a cam which reciprocates the frame 10 by means of a lever 23. The blocks 39, are fed to the cutters by means of a drum 30 driven from the shaft 20 through gearing 35, 37, and are supported by rollers 40. The cutters 11 may be heated electrically.
