Abstract

18,350. Newton, P. A., [Crown Cork & Seal Co.]. Aug. 14. Drilling-machines.-Plugs or " crown cork " disks are cut from slabs or strips of cork wood in a machine comprising two hollow rotary cutters 1, 2 secured to relatively staggered hollow spindles 3 slidably mounted in bearings 4. 5 on the machine frame. The spindles 3 are rotated by the main driving-shaft 9 acting through toothed gearing 8, 7, and are reciprocated by a cam 21 engaging rollers 16, 17 carried by a rod 13 pivoted to a collar 10 held in position on the spindles 3 by lock-nuts 11. The pin 18 carrying the roller 16 is fixed to the rod 13, but the roller 17 is mounted on a block 19 adjustable in a slot 15 in the rod 13 by a screw and nut 20. The cam 21 is mounted on a vertical shaft 22 driven through bevel gearing 24, 25 and pinions 27, 28 from the shaft 9. The shaft 22 is extended through the slot 15 to guide the rod 13 in its movement. The pinion 8 is splined to the shaft 9, and is formed with a flange 32, which engages between flanges 33 on the pinions and the lock-nuts 11 and thus causes it to reciprocate with the cutters. Rods 29 secured in a bearing 30 are mounted inside the cutters so that on the return stroke the plugs and disks will be ejected and fall into the receptacle 68. The slabs or strips from which the cork disks are to be cut are placed on a trough guide 66, and are moved in front of the reciprocating cutters by an endless carrier consisting of a pair of sprocket-chains 34 running over sprocket-wheels 35 mounted on shafts 36 supported by standards 37 on the machine frame. A trough guide 67 receives the waste material at the other side of the machine. One of the shafts 36 carries a racthet-wheel 38 rotated intermittently to feed the material by a pawl 39 actuated through a lever 40, link 41, bell-crank lever 42, 43, and connecting-rod 45, 46 by an eccentric strap 47 on the shaft 22. The ratchet-wheels 38 may be provided with friction pads 80 to prevent overthrow. The chains 34 also run over track rails 49 carried by brackets 48, and lateral movement is prevented by tongued and grooved cross-links 50 connecting the chain side bars and engaging the correspondingly-shaped blocker head 53. The work is gripped while being fed between jaw plates 54 on the links 50 and fingers 56<1> on plates 56 carried by spring plungers 55, each pair of which is connected by a strip 57 carrying a roller 58. The rollers 58 are engaged to open the grippers to grip the material in the trough 66, and to release the material when the trough 67 is reached by cams 59, 60, gauge fingers 65 are secured to the links 50 to determine the position of the material relative to the clamping devices. To prevent undue strain on the cork as the cutters leave the material, overlapping spring-pressed clamping- plates 69 carried by rods 70 supported by overhangiiig brackets 71 on the machine frame are arranged in front of the cutters. The clamping-plates 69 are withdrawn through a distance equal to the thickness of the work when the cork strips are fed by a lever 74 lying in the path of the strips engaging a shoulder 73 on the first clamping-plate. The blocker head 18 provided with the usual cutter blocks 75 adjustable by means of screws 76, but in order to prevent the disk being cut from the last cork strip from turning or twisting before the cut is completed, the face of each cutter block is provided with a roughened disk 78 secured to the block by screws 79.
