Abstract

18,291. Schneider, E. Aug. 12. Axles; changing gauge of road wheels. -Consists in a device for varying the wheel gauge of gun carriages. The spindles B carry external screw-threads b, engaging with the internal threads a of the common sleeve A. Each wheel hub c carries on its inner side a sleeve D having teeth d<1>, d<2> adapted to engage with a transverse clutch member E. which is compelled to rotate with the spindle B and rides as a nut on the screwthreads f of a rod F operated by the handles g. The rods F of the two wheels are caused to move together by the engagement of keys f<2> with slots h in a tube H. To increase the gauge, the handles g are rotated, causing the screws f to move the clutch members E into engagement with the teeth d<1>. In this position, spring-pins I in the spindles B, shown in section in Fig. 5, engage recesses in the members E and lock the wheels to the spindles. The wheels are then rotated, or run along the ground, and they then separate owing to the rotation of the screwed spindles B in the non-rotating sleeve A. At the end of the motion, the keys f<2> strike the ends of the slots h, and the rods F and clutch members E cease to move outwards; but the wheels C continue their outward motion until the teeth d<1> are disengaged from the members E, which are then again held by the pins I in the normal unlocked position, thus permitting the wheels to ride loosely on their spindles B. Reversing the motion of the handles g causes the members E to engage with the teeth d<2>, and the gauge can then be diminished by rotating the wheels; these are unlocked again automatically, when the minimum gauge is attained, by the contact and consequent stoppage of the rods F. The three-part axle may be replaced by an axle consisting of only two parts fitting into each other.
