Abstract
18,289. Pilkington, W. W. Aug. 12. Crucible and melting- pot furnaces.-To prevent or retard the deposit of dirt in the gas passages or furnaces for heating pots from which glass is drawn, the gas passages are arranged in pairs, each passage of a pair being in turn used to supply gas to the furnace while the other is rendered idle by a valve. This enables uncleaned producer - gas to be used without injury to the surface of the glass. In the furnace illustrated, the pot 1 is heated by two pairs of gas passages 6, 7 supplied with gas from the conduit 8. By means of a valve 9, which is periodically reversed during working, either the passages 6, 6 or 7, 7 are connected to the conduit 8, the others being idle. In order further to prevent the deposit of dirt, the parts 10 of the outlet passages 3 may be led close to the gas passages in order to heat these.
