Abstract
16,590. Vinel, H. July 23, 1910, [Convention date]. Drying-kilns.-Relates to kilns of the type wherein air is circulated continuously through the drying - chambers and heating - apparatus. The vapours extracted from the wood or other material under treatment are led continuously or intermittently to the furnace, which is situated between the drying - chambers. The gases from the furnace a pass through the tubes of the air-heater b. Air from the lower parts of the drying-chambers 2 passes through conduits 1, which serve to support the material to be dried, and enter the air-heater b, whence, after circulating among the pipes, it escapes through openings in the front and side walls to mixing-chambers 4 and thence through similar openings to the top of the drying-chambers. Air also passes from one drying-chamber to the other through transverse pipes 5 embedded in the roof of the furnace. Some of the air from the drying-chambers passes through longitudinal pipes embedded in the side walls of the furnace, and is conveyed direct to the mixing-chambers, being delivered in a direction at right-angles to the main current so as to produce a thorough mixing. The mixing-chamber above the furnace is provided with a safety grating to prevent the passage of sparks into the drying - chambers. When it is desired to discharge the vapours from the drying - chambers, dampers d are opened, and the air, charged with vapours, is drawn off by pipes c and delivered to the ash-pit. Small openings in the dampers allow a slight continuous discharge. Fresh air may be introduced into the air-heater and mixing-chambers through the pipe f, and into the ash-pit by the pipe e. The various chambers are lined with glazed tiles.
