Abstract

Pneumatic springs.-Relates to reciprocating conveyers and screens, and consists in arranging for the trough to compress air or gas during retardation at each end of the stroke, the energy absorbed being employed to assist the motion of the trough during the acceleration period of the reverse stroke. Fig. 1 shows one form in which the trough A is connected by the rod D to a piston E moving in a cylinder C closed at each end. A port G<3> may be provided in the middle of the cylinder to compensate for leakage past the piston during compression. This port may be employed for supplying air or gas under pressure to the cylinder. In a modification, the cylinder is connected to the trough. Modifications are described in which two cylinders or pistons are employed. In further modifications, a cylinder open at one end is caused to compress air at each end of the stroke of the trough by connecting the piston to the trough through links and levers.
