Abstract

[Addition to 19,608/07.] Pack-saddles. - The pack - frames of the pack-saddle described in the parent Specification are convertible i n t o sledges for the purpose of enabling a machinegun and its appurtenances to be dragged along the ground. Wooden sledge runners 1 to which irons 1<1> are bolted are formed at their ends with grooves 2 for the reception of the flanges of the channel-iron pack-frame bars 3 corresponding to the load-carrying bars of the saddle. The runners 1 are fastened together by two leather straps 13, and are provided with blocks, the upper ends 5, 6 of which project above the runners, the ends 5 embracing the cross-bars 7 of the pack-frame so as to prevent the runners from moving relatively to one another. Catches 9 pivoted vertically to plates 8 on the blocks hold the bars 3 down upon the runners, and are prevented from swinging by the ends 6 and by horizontally pivoted latches 11. Vertically resilient slides may be employed in place of the latches 11. The ring 17 of the drawing-rope 18 is connected by double lines 16 to snap-hooks 15 secured to eyes 14. The runners may be fitted together by means of pegs and holes for strapping on to the saddle. In a modification, the straps 13 are dispensed with, and the stops 5, 6 and locking-members 9, 11 are provided on the inside as well as on the outside of the runners. The stops 5, 6 may be provided direct]y on the runners instead of on the blocks, the straps 13 may be replaced by sheet material stretched between the runners, and the grooves in the runners may be made to suit any other cross-section of the bars 3.
