Abstract
14,718. Campbell, G. H. June 21. Retting. - Unretted flax stalks for textile, paper-making, and other purposes are subjected, at any stage after cutting, to the action of ozonized air, for the purpose of loosening and rendering brittle the incrusting or shive material, and for bleaching the resulting fibre. The material during treatment may be sprayed with or immersed in water or other suitable liquid such as dilute alkaline carbonate or bicarbonate, or it may be suspended in a closed chamber and treated with ozonized air that has been passed through water. After the shive has been loosened, it is subjected to breaking, scutching, &c. To obtain a perfectly white fibre, the first operation is carried on only until the shive is loosened, and the material is then dried, and, after breaking, scutching, spinning, or weaving, may again be moistened or suspended in a liquid and treated with ozonized air.
