Abstract
14,011. Newall & Son, R. S., and Skelton, R. T. June 13. Machines for niaking.-In wire-rope making machines in which the wires or strands are uncoiled from bobbins mounted in frames disposed along the axis of a rotating cage, the frames are positively driven in either direction by gearing separate from that of the cage. Fig. 1 shows a rotary cage 5 which is supported between sets of rollers 3 and carries bobbin frames 6. The cage is driven from the driving- shaft 10 by gearing 11, 12, and the frames 6 by epicycle gearing 21, 22, 24, 25, Fig. 4, from a spur-wheel 18, which is driven through interchangeable gear. upon a change quadrant 16 from the shaft 10 or the spindle of the gearwheel 11. The epicyclic gearing, Fig. 4, is carried by the plate 9<a> of the cage. Similar epicyclic gearing is disposed between the bobbin frames upon the cage plates, the frames being thus linked to rotate together. By varying the gear, the bobbin frames may be driven at various speeds. A " dead laid " rope or strand is produced by rotating the frames in the opposite direction to the cage. The speeds of the individual frames may also be varied by arranging the ratios of the epicyclic gearing. The wires a pass through the hollow spindles of the gears 21 and guides 29.
