13,255. Heaton, J. June 2. Stream-cutting machines; moulds; pressing plungers and dies; processes. -Relates to a method and apparatus for making roofing-tiles. Sheets of clay are cut from a block having the dimensions of the length and breadth of the tiles, and these sheets are then pressed between a pair of plates having means for producing the nibs and nail holes. The bar of clay B, produced by extrusion, is placed upon a board A which is furnished with a rack a<1> meshing with a pinion D operated by an adjustable ratchet device d<4>, and is fed to a cutting- frame E. The frame E is operated by a counterweighted treadle e<6>, and an oscillating movement is imparted to the frame by arranging the stem E', which connects the frame to the treadle, asymmetrically. A rugous or wrinkled appearance is imparted to the tiles by yieldingly securing the cutting-wire e<1> at one end through a spring e<2>. The cut tiles are then placed between a pair of plates F, G, Figs. 7 and 8, uf which the plate F is furnished with perforating-pins f<1> carried by a spring plate f<3>, and the plate G is formed with recesses g<1> to produce the nibs. The plates F, G, with the cut-off clay sheet between them, are run along bars H, Fig. 4, which forces the clay into the recesses g<1> and forms the nibs. A knife h<2> arranged at the end of the bars H removes the excess of clay, after which the plates are pressed against a cross-bar h<3> to cause the pins f<1> to perforate the tile. The cutting-apparatus and the tile-forming apparatus may be combined with an extrusion machine, the forming-plates being supplied mechanically; instead of separate plates, a combined front and rear plate may be employed.
