India-rubber &c., extracting from plants.-In a dry process of extracting rubber &c. from plants, the plants are shredded, without crushing, between conical surfaces provided with cutting-ribs, and the fragments of rubber which agglomerate are separated from the woody powder or bark by screening. The vertical spindle 5, Fig. 2, driven by bevel-gearing 11 from the driving-shaft 12 and supported at its lower end in a bearing 13 carried by an adjustable pivoted lever, carries a series of rings or sleeves 6, 7, 8 having knives which work in the hopper 3, and a conical ring 9 working within a stationary conical ring 2. Knives 4 are provided on the inside of the hopper, and the rings 2, 9 are slightly convex in cross-section and provided with cutting - ribs. The reduced material falls through a shoot 17, Fig. 1, into a box 18, which is provided with screens 19, 21 and may be pivoted at 24 and vibrated by a rod 25 operated by an eccentric on the shaft 12. The screening-apparatus may be independent of the mill. A hand-operated machine is also shown and described.
