Abstract

9625. Lake, W. E., [Kelley Electric Machine Co.]. April 20. Disk and wheel apparatus.-Relates to woodworking machines of the type disclosed in Specification 1851/08, [Class 145, Wood &c.], for operations such as routing, carving, surfacing, &c. Fig. 7 shows the machine fitted with a sanding-disk S, but other tools may be fitted according to the operation to be performed. A casing consisting of a base or skirt A, a body B, and a head secured together by bolts, encloses the electric or other motor, the armature shaft being centrally mounted in a bush in the head and a ball bearing e<1> in the base A, and extending downwards to drive the sanding-disk. The base A is provided with hand-grips a<3>, by which the casing is moved over the surface of the work. The armature shaft is fitted with a fly-wheel P having its spokes shaped to draw in air to cool the motor and blow away the shavings. The air enters the motor casing through apertures in a cap secured over the head by a nut, and passes out through apertures in the top of the base A. A brake device Q may be pressed into engagement with the fly-wheel P against the resistance of a spring q<1>, and the fly-wheel may be provided with a hole q<2> in order that it may be locked in position by means of a tool inserted through a hole q<3> in the top of the base A. The sanding-disk S is splined to a shaft s screwed on the lower end of the armature shaft, and may be lowered into contact by the work by means of a lever T pivoted to a support s<1> screwed into a threaded flange l depending from the top a<1> of the base or skirt A. The lever T is connected to the sanding-disk by trunnions engaging a thrust bearing, and is operated by hand against the resistance of a spring t<3>. The top of the base A is split radially on one side through the flange l, and the split parts are clamped together so as to hold firmly the support s<1> and the outer race ring of the ball-bearing e<1> by a screw l<1>. Lubrication of the working parts is effected through a central boring in the armature shaft communicating by means of ducts r<1> with the bearings.
