Refuse-consuming furnaces; grates.-In apparatus for treating house refuse to obtain combustible gases, the refuse is first charged on to ignited fuel in the furnace b at the bottom of the shaft a, this fuel and the charge of refuse being independently air-fed in regulated quantities by the inlets y, y<1>, and the gases obtained by combustion of the refuse are passed through one or more secondary charges composed of fresh refuse contained in a chamber j separated from the first by a passage r<1>. The two chambers are separated by a partition n having a layer q of air-proof cement. The furnace b at the bottom of the chamber a is bounded by the step-grate c and a fire-bridge f, from the other side of which extends the grate s, formed of flat iron bars placed on edge and movable around the shaft t, the lower portion resting on a cam-shaft u extending outside the, apparatus, by which the grate may be rocked. The ashes from this grate fall into the space r<1> which forms the common ash-pit for the two chambers, the ashes being removed through the doors x. The floor of the chamber j is formed by a removable plate grate k. The gases finally escape through the hopper m and outlet z. Two superimposed series of doors are provided in the front wall, the lower series e communicating with the dry-fuel furnace and the upper series g with the refuse chamber a.
