Abstract

8085. Owen, H. S. April 1, 1910, [Convention date]. Moulding by dipping; moulds; processes.- Cement, concrete, and like blocks &c. are formed in paraffin-wax moulds which are removed from the articles, after setting, by heat. The moulds are produced by dipping a frame carrying formers into a bath of molten paraffin, and, where a thick-walled mould is desired, the dipping is repeated several times. Fig. 1 shows one form of apparatus for producing the mould, comprising a frame 4 carrying formers 12 and a stripping frame 11, which is operated by a hand-wheel 10. Fig. 4 shows the form of mould produced. To prevent adhesion, the surface of the formers is moistened with water, the formers being preferably made of wood, or faced with some absorbent material, such as wood, cloth, leather, &c. The moulds are placed upon a truck 21, and filled with the concrete &c. in a liquid condition, and, after setting, the truck is run into a bath 23, Fig. 5, containing water 24 heated by burners 25. The molten wax 27 rises to the surface, and is retained between partitions 26, the freed blocks being then removed for curing. Where necessary, cross-webs for strengthening the moulds are produced by using small cores 14, Fig. 1, between the formers 12. In a modification, the formers are made hollow so as to produce cored moulds suitable for the casting of hollow blocks. Fig. 20 shows a further modification of the former, comprising a fence 12<b>; Fig. 21 shows the moulds produced. Instead of dipping the formers into molten paraffin, the moulds may be produced by pouring the molten paraffin into the inverted former and draining. In making articles of concrete, the concrete is prepared by agitating the cement with warm water in a rotary drum for half an hour or more, decanting the excess of water, and adding the predetermined quantities of sand and gravel. The invention is applied to the manufacture of bricks, blocks, tiles, slabs, fenceposts, beams, drain-pipes, sewer-pipes, shingles, &c. Specifications 8086/11 and 8087/11 are referred to.
