Abstract

7778. Wakefield, C. J. March 28. Adding-apparatus for recording each break in billiards on a segmental scale and for mechanically adding it to the previous score and simultaneously displaying the total score on a circular dial. A pointer g<1> working in a graduated slot and carried by a lever c indicates the separate breaks, while the lever c actuates, through a pawl d and ratchet-wheel b, a pointer a moving round a graduated dial, a non-reverse pawl e being provided. To release the pawl d from the wheel, it is moved one tooth in the reverse direction, thereby causing a pin d<2> to ride into engagement with the enlarged end i of a flat spring h. On being returned to zero the end i engages a stop j which releases the pin d<2> from the spring, the pawl being re-engaged with the ratchet-wheel by spring d<1>. The hub of the ratchet-wheel is grooved and surrounded by a spring n which acts against the forward rotation and so causes the teeth to bear against the pawl e in order to hold the wheel in such a position as to be alwavs engaged by the actuating-pawl d. In a modification, the pointer is operated from the ratchet-wheel by gearing, the increment scale being eccentric to the circular dial, and the arm h, instead of having an enlarged end, is itself bent to form a knuckle, above or below which the pin d<2> rests.
