Abstract

7547. Aldridge, J. G. W. March 25. Charging. -In a pivoted push - plate retort-charger of the type described in Specifications 10,480/02,5375/06, 27,117 / 06, and 26,056 / 08, [all in Class 55, Gas manufacture], some or all of the push-plates can be moved independently of the body of the charger in order to compress the coal in the retort. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the push-plates a are pivoted to arched supports b carried by blocks c adapted to slide in guide slots d formed in the side plates e of the charger, and are operated independently of the charger body by an arm j on the winding-drum through a connecting-rod k, cross-head l, and jointed rods o. In order that the charge shall be compressed evenly through the retort the plates a are moved through distances gradually increasing from the front to the rear of the charger. To effect this, the rod o is formed near each push-plate with upstanding teeth o<2>, o<3>, between which is engaged a pin c<2> on a plate c<1> pivoted to the block c. The pin c<2> moves in a slot c<3>, and the inclination of this slot and the height of the rear tooth o<3> are so related that, when the pushplate has been moved through the required distance, the rod o moves forward leaving the plate behind. The charger is moved forward by arms g engaging projections g', and is arrested at the end of its strokes by stops h. To prevent movement of the charger during the rearward movement of the push-plates, a bolt r is allowed to drop into a fixed socket t when the draw-hooks s leave the pins u. The rod k is made in two parts connected by springs k<4> arranged to absorb the shock due to the sudden application of power on the return stroke. In a modification, the compression is effected by continuing the forward movement of the side plates and releasing the push-plates at intervals so that they are successively, left behind.
