, CHARGER FOR RETORTS.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Q Applicationfi1ed- March 26, 1919; Serial No. 285,171.
useful Improvements Relating to- Chargers for Retorts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tothe charging of retorts or, chambers (hereinafter termed retorts) of thehorizontal orinclined typefor the destructive distillation of carbonaceous materials, and refers particularly to such re-. torts when adapted-for continuous working, the material being fed into one end of the retort-intermittently and causing an equivalent quantity of carbonized material to be discharged from the other end of the retort.
By investigation and experiment, I have found that it is essential that the quantity of coal or the like which is being fed into the retort must be placed between the coal being carbonized and the feeding plunger or ram in such a manner that the said plunger shall act upon a layer of coal which fills the space between itself and the carbonizing material, so that there is an even propulsive effort over practically the whole face of the material in the retort; binding or wedging of the charge is thereby obviated.
My invention comprises the employment for charging horizontal or inclined retorts of the continuously operating type, of a ram or plunger consisting of at least two parts (forming a main ram and an auxiliary ram respectively) one of which serves to propel the material, constituting a charge, into a position in which it fills the space between the other part and the coal or the like being carbonized in the retort, when the ram or plunger advances as a whole to feed the charge into the retort.
My invention further comprises the employment of a ram or plunger made in two parts, one of which is directly connected to the power actuating means, while the other part is propelled from the former when the two parts have their acting faces in line with one another. 1
My invention further comprises the provision of an automatic catch for holding one-part of'the ram stationary until the other part has comeinto line-therewith. "Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings -F gure 1 is a sectional elevation illus trating---one convenient application: of the invention. r 'Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on thel-ine AB of Fig. 1 and-Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation onthe line CD of Fig. 1'."
I The same =reference letters' in the three views indicate the same parts.
In the illustrated application true in .vention' for feeding coal or the-like into a Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
continuously operating horizontal or, in-
clined retort, the ram or plunger forfeeding the coal charge to-the retort'is divided'into two parts, one part a (hereinafter termed the upper part or the auxiliary ram) being directly connected by the rod 6 to the powerv actuating means, w ich may consist of a hydraullc motor, and serving to close the .mouth of the coal, chute or hopper c after the charge has been received therefrom. The
other and lower portion d of the ram (or, I
what may betermed the main ram) is operated from the upper portion a when the acting faces 'of'the two portions are in line with one another, so that the two portions then move together. We provide on the main ram 03 a pivotally mounted catch piece 6 to hold such ram stationary until the upper portion or auxiliary ram 0;, is about to actuate the said main ram (due to the downwardly projecting part 7 of the upper or auxiliary ram engaging the cross member of the lower or main ram), when the said catch e is released from the fixed hook h as hereinafter described.
The operation of the charging means is as follows :-Assuming that the whole ram is in its rearmost position, as shown, coal can its front face the position of the front face of the lower portion. The upper portion now releases the catch 6 (by the part 7 engaging the arm jof the catch) and finally eifects the propulsion of the lower portion, coal being forced forward by one or both portions of the ram according to the amount of the charge.
It will be understood that practically a fiat disk or block made up of pieces of coal is forced against the coal in the retort, so that an even pressure is applied thereto. If the coal charge is merely heaped up in front of the ram and compressed by the latter there is excessive pressure exerted at the bottom of the charge in the retort which sets up wedging or binding and prevents the eificient operation of the plant. On the return stroke of the upper portion or auxiliary ram a, the lower portion or main ram (Z may remain stationary until the upper portion has traversed a predetermined distance, when the two parts move together due to the part f of the upper portion an engaging the rear of the lower portion d and finally the latter is locked by its catch piece 6.
I may vary the details of my improved charging means to suit any particular requirements.
Having now described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In charging devices for retorts, the combination with a main charging ram, of an auxiliary charging ram riding upon the main ram, a chute delivering coal in advance of the auxiliary ram and upon the top of the main ram, means traversing the said auxiliary ram, and means for traversing the main ram from the auxiliary rain, the latter in its movement closing the exit from the shoot, transferring the coal to the end face of the main ram and then carrying the latter forward with it to chargethe retort as set forth. 1
2. In charging devices for retorts, the combination with a main charging ram, of an auxiliary charging ram riding upon the main ram a chute delivering coal in advance of the auxiliary ram and upon the top of the main rain, means traversing the said auxiliary ram, means for locking the main ram against movement, means upon the auxiliary ram for releasing the locking means of the main rain and for traversing the lat ter with the auxiliary rain, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM WILD.
