Abstract
7393. Semple Co., J. B., [Semple, J. B.]. March 24. Projectiles ; projectile fuses.-Relates to fuses operated by the pressure of the powder gases confined within a chamber in the projectile, and consists in providing locking means therefor adapted to be released by the pressure or the heat of the powder gases or by the energy derived therefrom, Fig. 2 shows the form preferred for use for igniting a ' tracer ' charge which gives a trail of smoke along the path of the projectile. The serrated rod 6 of the friction primer 5 is normally locked by a powder charge 7<a>, which is destroyed by the powder gases admitted by a hole 10 ; as soon as the projectile leaves the gun, the pressure in the chamber 20 drives the washer 8 and the rod 6 backwards and the composition 2 is ignited by the primer 5. In a modification, the igniter is released by a fusible washer. In other modifications, the igniter is released by bolts which are thrown radially outwards by the pressure of the powder gases or by centrifugal force. The tracer charge 2 is placed axially in the base of the projectile as a closing plug therefor, or in a recess in the side wall of the projectile base.
