Planes, arrangement of; steering.-Aeroplanes are provided with upper and lower surfaces of unequal length in a lateral direction, the planes converging at each side. As shown in Fig. 1, the two lower planes a extend beyond, and converge towards, the extremities of the upper plane b, so that openings c are formed through which the air, imprisoned between the planes, can escape. Adjustable shutters may control these openings. The upper plane may be the longer and may have a central hole d, Fig. 5 for the air to escape from. The planes instead of being curved may be built up, as shown in Fig. 5, of plane surfaces a, b.
