Abstract

6639. Jones, E. H. March 16. Jackets and covers. - Pneumatic tyre covers are reinforced by an elastic metal fabric a capable of extension up to a desired limit. The fabric comprises interlaced spring wire helices, arranged transversely or obliquely, and is folded over at the edges to form the beads or is attached to beads otherwise formed. The cover is formed on a mandrel of such a size that the helices are extended, and rubber is worked into the helices and vulcanized while they are extended. In the form shown in Fig. 1, each helix is interlaced with four others. In a modification, the transverse or oblique helices are interlaced with circumferential helices. One or more lavers of the fabric with the helices of adjacent layers crossing one another may be employed in addition to the main fabric.
