Abstract

5456. Bock, C. de. March 4. Sterilizing and preserving milk &c.-Milk or other liquid is sterilized in containers under pressure, for example f o u r a t m o s p h e r e s, which is exerted by the milk &c. throughout the heating and cooling, and which is sufficient to prevent decomposition, the containers being subsequently closed without access of air to the milk &c. Suitable apparatus comprises autoclaves 3 containing pipes 4 which communicate with the containers 1 and with a tube 7 or pump. Pistons 8 communicate by passages 40 with the pipes 4, and by passages 39 with the containers. In operation, the pistons 8 being in the position shown in Fig. 4, the containers are filled by a pump having a returnvalve opening at a certain pressure or by the tube 7 or tank 32 in conjunction with a pump, and after sterilization, the pistons 8 are raised. Pistons 20 are then raised by springs 14 within cylinders 11 carried by the screw covers 10, the pressure being reduced in the chambers 27 by milk entering chambers 26 through apertures 17, and the vessels are finally sealed by the packings 24, as shown in Fig. 5. Alternatively, the milk may pass into chambers 30 in the covers, Fig. 5, which are closed during heating by ball-valves &c. 31 depressed by springs &c. The passages 39 may be provided with valves which drop to close the passages when the pistons 8 are raised. The containers may be filled before placing in the autoclaves, and the pistons 8 may be operated from outside the autoclaves.
