Abstract

5349. East, R. G. March 3. Hopper and plunger machines; moulding india-rubber.-In regenerating india-rubber by means of heat and pressure, the disintegrated material is heated throughout its mass before pressing, and is finally moulded at a temperature higher than that to which it was heated before compression. A machine for carrying out the invention comprises a feedhopper H, pressing-plungers J operating within compression chambers G, and moulds C arranged within a chamber B formed with heating- chambers F. The hopper H is heated by means of a steam coil or the like, or by radiation from the mould chamber B, and is fitted with a stirring-device. The disintegrated rubber is fed into the hopper H, where it is heated, with stirring, to a temperature not exceeding 100‹F., and passes thence into the compression chamber G, from which it is forced into the moulds C, where it is heated to a temperature not exceeding 285‹ F. and re-formed. The final temperature may be as low as 270‹ F.
