Abstract

5020. Chapman, C. H. Feb. 28. Heels.-A detachable heel is formed of rubber which is moulded on to the heads of rivets 4, Fig. 4, carried by a plate 2 in such a way that they can yield both vertically and laterally. This plate is provided with edge holes 5, Fig. 3, rectangular holes 6 at the breast end, and an elliptical or other shaped hole 7 at its back end. The plate 2 is adapted to interlock with a plate 9, Fig. 6, secured to the boot by nails passing through holes 10, the plate being accurately positioned on the heel by assembling the various parts of the heel before attachment and placing marking-pins 8, Fig. 8, in the holes 5 of the plate 2 and corresponding holes formed in the rubber during the moulding operation; the pins 8 are removed before the heel is finally attached. The plate 9 is formed with a lip 12 adapted to extend through the hole 7 in the plate 2 into the heel, and two off-set lips 15, which are adapted to pass through and underlie the holes 6. After the plates have been engaged, a pin 16, Fig. 8, is passed from breast to back between the lips 15 and through a hole 13, Fig. 6, in the lug 12; the pin may have a circumferential groove to interlock with the lug 12. The heel is moulded with a hole to receive the pin 16, and this hole extends right through the pad so that a nail 17, Fig. 8, may be used to drive out the pin 16 when it is desired to remove the heel. In a modified construction, the centre of the plate 2 is formed with two downwardly-extending lugs to guide the pin 16, a perforated lip through which the pin is passed, and a hole for the head of the pin to .snap into. The pin is not grooved, and lies wholly concealed in the heel. The rivets 4 may be tubular, and both the rivets and the plate 2 may be copper-plated in order to vulcanize the rubber more firmly about them.
