Abstract

4410. Fasting, J. S. Feb. 24, 1910, [Convention date]. Separating by shaking-apparatus.-Granular or pulverized substances are separated according to fineness or specific gravity by means of an inclined plane or curved surface to which a rapid reciprocating vertical motion is imparted ; the finer particles or those of less specific gravity travel upwards, while the coarser particles or those of higher specific gravity pass downwards Fig. 2 shows a box 7 containing two inclined planes 1, 11 and fastened to the upper end of a bar 14, which is connected to a spring 16 on the frame 15, and carries a rotating pulley 18 with an eccentric weight 19. The cement &c. is fed on to a plate 9 and passes over the edge 10 on to the centre of the plate 11, which is of less inclination than, and has its upper edge 12 located above, the centre of the lower plate 1. The finest particles pass over the upper edge 2 of the lower plate, and the coarser material is discharged from the lower ends 13 of the plates. A hinge 21 is inserted between the box 7 and the bar 14 to allow the inclination of the box to be adjusted. Several plates of different inclinations and arranged one above the other may be used, and the different grades of material escaping from the lower ends of the plates may be collected separately. Or the finer and coarser particles separated by a plate may be further graded on separate plates. Fig. 3 shows a modification comprising a series of funnel-shaped plates 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 of increasing inclinations and with their upper edges located above the centre of the plate next below. The plates are operated by a crank 36 and rod 37 and the material is fed through a funnel in the top plate 29 on to a circular plate 31. The finest particles pass over the edge of the plate 25 and are discharged by a spout 28, while the material escaping from the lower ends of the plates is delivered by a spout 27 ; or all the plates may be closed at the bottom and fitted with discharge tubes. The motion of the plate may be somewhat inclined, or swinging in circular arcs. A plate having different inclinations at different parts may be used to divide material into several different grades.
