4387. Sherrin, J.. Vaughan.. Sept. 21. Casting-machines ; moulds; clamping and guiding flasks and moulds.-A vacuum casting-machine for steel, phosphor bronze, &c. comprises a two-part mould a, b, a flask j, cover k, and pouring-block m. A pipe o communicates with a vacuum chamber and with a vent in the sand. Small passages p and capillary ducts p<3> facilitate the removal of the enclosed air or gas. A trap 2, interposed between the vacuum chamber and the mould is provided with oil or other sealing liquid and with fine wiregauze for collecting sand or for preventing the escape of flaming-gas. The pouring-block has a fire-proof lining and is rotated by means of handles z to twist off the runner. In a modification, the mould is enclosed in a box, in the cover of which the pouring-block is situated, and the mould is raised up to the block by means of rack and pinion, a plumb-bob being let down from the block for positioning purposes.
