Abstract

4335. Marshall, D. Feb. 21. Book &c. rests.-A portable book-rest, Fig. 4, consists of six metal strips pivoted together at P. Two of the strips E, F form a ledge for supporting the book, two others A, B form the back rest, and the remaining two C, D when opened out into the position indicated by dotted lines serve as legs for holding the rest at a convenient distance from the user. The strips A, B are held in the extended position by a jointed link J, similar jointed links also connecting the strips A, E and B, F, or chains K may be used, as shown. Leaf-holders are provided consisting of two parts Y, W, the part Y being pivoted to the part W, which is rigidly secured to the ledge E. To limit the opening of the struts C, D, a stop S is provided on the lower end of the member B as shown in Fig. 8, which represents a back view of a part of the rest. The stop consists of a turned-over portion S against which the strut C abuts. The upper end of the strut D also has a turned over portion adapted to engage a recess U formed in the strut C. Fig. 10 shows a modification of the book-rest, consisting of a folding lattice. The ledges E, F are pivoted together at R, the lattice being pivoted to the ledge E at P. The rest may also be constructed of three rods or tubes pivoted together at their middle points, the legs being formed by the continuation of the upper rods A, B, Fig. 4. The rods may be telescopic. In all the forms, a reel R, Fig. 9, may be provided upon which a cord H, which passes round the shoulders of the user for supporting the rest, may be wound, the other end of the cord being held in a slot V in the rod B, Fig. 4.
