Change-box motions.-In a drop-box motion of the kind in which the box rod is raised and lowered by a rack and pinion driven by a double rack operated from cams on the tappet-shaft, weighted needles c, c<1>, d<2>, adapted to be engaged by a swinging plate g, are employed to operate the vertical shaft b controlling the position of the double rack and the sleeve d controlling the position of the cams j on the tappetshaft e. The needles c, c<1>, d<2> are guided by a plate f, and are pressed down so as to engage the plate g by fingers p<Î> on fallers p<1>, p<2>, p<3>, which are controlled by either of two pattern cylinders l, l<1> and are raised and lowered by a lever q<1> operated from the tappet-shaft. The turning-catches of the cylinders l, l<1> are controlled by fallers p, p<4> having fingers p<5>, p<6> adapted to engage holes in the pattern cards. In the event of the needles c, c<1>, d<2> all engaging the plate g at the same time, a spring t yields and allows the sleeve d and rod b to be pressed aside, so as to prevent damage.
