Abstract

3120. Hanna, J. G. Feb. 7. Aerial machines without aerostats; framework.-The fuselage of the machine is triangular in cross section and is constructed of longitudinals 11 the lower one of which inclines rearwardly towards the upper ones so that the extremities are in the same horizontal line. The main planes are stayed by wires 38, 39 extending respectively from the axle 36 and from the framework 40. Planes, arrangement of.-The sides of the triangular fuselage are covered in and a central pin 14 is provided. These with the rear elevator 19 which is of substantial size and the main planes 15 disposed at the dihedral angle constitute an arrangement of surfaces giving automatic stability while minimizing the tendency to rock. Steering and balancing.-Lateral steering is effected by pulling down one or other of a pair of flexible planes 31 so as to brake the machine on one side. These planes are mounted on the underside of the main planes and are operated by cords 33 and a pivoted rod 32. The planes also cause the machine to assume the lateral cant necessary when turning. The rudder 26, pivoted at 27, is employed only for maintaining a straight course. The tail-plane elevator 19 is pivoted at 20 to the extremities of the longitudinals 11 of the fuselage. It is trussed by means of a pair of struts 22 which serve also for attachment of the operating-cords.
