Abstract

2295. Wilson, G. E., and Wilson, G. E. Jan. 30. Mortising.-A spacing-device for mortising- machines, more particularly for use with repetition work, consists of a rod e attached to the sliding work-table d and carrying stops i, adjustably secured by set-screws n in relation to an end stop m. The work is clamped on the table with its end in contact with the stop m, and holes are mortised in the position in which a pivoted catch p, held depressed by pressure on a foot-lever q, engages with the stops i. After each hole is mortised, the catch is raised to allow the stop to pass under it by releasing the foot-lever, which rises under the influence of a spring or counterweight t. When the width of the chain or other tool is less than the length of the hole required, the table is traversed between the limits allowed by the engagement of the catch p with two properly adjusted stops. In modifications, the catch may be fixed and the stop-rod movable laterally ; or the stoprod may be rotatable and have the stops mounted eccentrically so that a partial rotation of the stop-rod brings it into an inoperative position.
