Abstract

1597. Gardner, A. March 9, 1910, [Convention date]. Scraping-machines, taking up refuse for removal.-Relates to tramway rail-cleaning apparatus of the kind in which a scoop is provided on each side of a special truck, and elevators are arranged so as to collect the dirt removed from the rails by the scoops and convey it to a receptacle on the truck. The invention consists mainly in pivotally supporting the scoops on the truck, and in providing a spring-cushioned tongue on the scoop, which is adapted to enter the rail-groove. Fig. 1 shows in side elevation the truck 7, on each side of which is arranged an elevator 10, to the casing of which is pivoted at 15 a scoop 14. The elevators 10 working in connexion with each scoop raise the dirt and discharge it over inclines 13 into the truck. Mounted beneath the scoops are tongues 19, which rest upon and engage in the rails, are guided in bearings 20, and are controlled by springs 22, as shown in Fig. 3. Extending from each scoop is a bar 17, which carries a guidewheel 18, and is connected to a lever 23 for lifting the scoop out of action. The backward sliding movement of the tongues through the medium of toggle-levers 26, 27 causes a wheel 28 to be forced on to the rail to ensure the lifting of the scoop and tongue when obstacles are met. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the elevator 10 works from back to front of the scoop 14. Instead of employing a separate truck, the apparatus may be applied to an ordinary passenger car having bins. to receive the dirt. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 3434/72, 10,023/00, 12,845/03, [Class 104, Railways &c.], and 25,713/05.
