Abstract
1399. Cartland, J. H., and Teale, E. J. Jan. 19. Operating swinging doors. - In door-closing devices of the kind in which a spring, enclosed in a barrel carried by a bracket fixed to the door frame, acts upon an arm slidingly engaging the back of the door, the barrel is formed from sheet metal and is made integral with the arm or the bracket. The combined barrel and bracket is formed from a blank a, Fig. 5, which is bent into the form shown in Fig. 9. The ends b of the blank are riveted together and provided with screw-holes e, Fig. 1, for fixing to the door frame. The arm is formed from a blank f provided with lugs h adapted to carry an antifriction roller l, and also with lugs m which are bent to embrace the ends of the barrel, washers q being preferably interposed. To strengthen the arm f, it is provided with stamped ribs g, and the edges p, Fig. 14, are slightly bent over. Fig. 14 shows a combined arm and barrel which may be used with a castiron bracket, or preferably with a sheet-metal bracket made by bending a blank y into the form shown in Fig. 16. To give a double thickness to the lugs y', the middle of the blank may be cut and slit and bent up to agree with the lugs y'; or the blank may be bent as shown in Fig. 18; or an additional piece of metal y<2>, Fig. 19, may be provided.
