Abstract

1362. Burckhardt, F. W. Jan. 18. Silica glass; stained glass-ware. - Relates to the process for producing tubular blanks of plastic quartz according to which quartz grains are fused to a homogeneous mass in an electric resistance furnace. According to the invention, the grains of quartz are of varying size, and may be mixed together uniformly, or the finer grains may be packed round the resistance core, the coarser grains forming an outer layer, or a number of successive layers may be formed. Layers of coloured quartz may be introduced so as to produce ornamental effects in the finished ware. Combustible material, such as paper, may be used to separate the layers initially. The temperature of the core is raised sufficiently to vaporize the quartz in its immediate neighbourhood. The quartz vapours so produced penetrate the spaces between the grains and weld the whole into a plastic mass.
