491. Thompson, W. P., [Hide-Ite Leather Co.]. Jan. 7. Artificial leather; boards; materials, fibrous; pulp, preparation of.-Leather board is made by incorporating a mass of finely-divided non- fibrous particles produced from leather with a mass of fibrous leather. The non-fibrous leather particles are produced by dissolving leather scrap in a solution of caustic soda or caustic potash or both and precipitating with a salt of aluminium; or the leather scrap may be subjected to the action of live steam, dried and ground to a powder. The non-fibrous mass is introduced into the beating-engine containing the leather stock which has been reduced to a fibrous mass, and the whole is mixed together; when the mass is homogeneous, it is drawn off into the usual storage chest. The non-fibrous leather particles are usually substantially waterproof in themselves, but a salt of chromium mav be added to the non-fibrous mass before introduction into the beating-engine, or it may be added to the mass in the beating-engine for rendering the product waterproof.
