Abstract
159. McDaniel, J. Jan. 3. Reciprocating or oscillating sieves. - In sifting - apparatus particularly applicable as a grain - separator for separating oats from wheat, and consisting of an oscillating sieve-box 10, Fig. 1, with upper and lower sieves, the lower sieve is c o nstructed of angle-plates 24 with the inner angles of the apexes rounded, so that the openings allow wheat kernels to pass but not oat kernels. The plates. 24, Fig. 2, are V-shaped in crosssection and have the i n n e r walls rounded, and are secured at the ends to plates 23, Fig. 4, having outwardlyturned edges bearing on the flanges of the side b a r s 20. Transverse plates 25, secured at the ends to the plates 23 and having recesses 26, fit against the rounded apexes of the plates 24, the distance between the edge of a plate 25 and the inside angle of the adjoining plate 24 being less than an oat kernel but greater than a wheat kernel. Longitudinal strips or ribbons 27 have recesses 34 in their edges forming shoulders 35 which project into the pockets and agitate the material passing through the sieve. The ends of the strips are secured by pins 28 to rails 29 which are secured to rails 30 fitted within the channel-bars 20, and a rod 32 secured at one end to the frame of the machine and at the other end to a block 33 on the rail 30 prevents the rails 29, 30 from moving longitudinally. Partitions 36, 36<a>, and 37, 37<a> disposed above and below the ribbons 27, are alternately stationary and movable; the plates 36<a>, 37 being secured to the end bar 21 while the plates 36, 37<a> pass through slots in the bar 21 and are secured by pins 38 to the stationary rail 29. The lips 39 stamped out in forming the slots for the plates 36, 36<a>, 37, 37<a>, have rounded inner surfaces. The sieve - box is suspended by adjustable hangers 11, 12, and actuated bv a rod 16 from an eccentric 17. The material is fed from a hopper 4 by a roller 5, and a fan 9 removes the lighter particles.
