Abstract

191,086. Clayton, H. June 28, 1921. Closure members, rotary disc or sector; wedging or jamming; indicators, applications of; locking catches.-A valve comprising a rotary disc or sector mounted eccentrically to the passage way is provided with means for lifting the valve slightly from its seat during the opening movement. A disc a, Fig. 1, is formed integral with a spindle b which is mounted in bearings c, d, formed in the two parts of the casing e. A passage g is formed through the disc a at one point, while the disc carries one or more valve faces j which may be removed for renewal when required. Each valve j is carried in a recess k and is secured by a nut o, or, alternatively, the valve may be formed with a spherical base q, Fig. 3, which enables better contact with the seating to be obtained. Alternatively, the disc a may be formed with plain working faces on both sides. The disc a may be formed with additional passages for the fluid, these being of different diameters, so that the flow may be regulated. In this case, only one valve member j is employed. The disc a is normally pressed towards its seating by a spring s, and a stud t is adapted to co-operate with a cam groove u so that the disc is lifted from its seating during the opening movement. The disc a may be operated by means of worm gearing v, m. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the bearing 2 is provided with an integral boss 3 having a cam-shaped face 4 which cooperates with a similar cam on the sleeve 6 carried by the spindle b, to lift the valve from its seat. In Fig. 1, an additional spring 8 may be employed to press the valve on its seat, and the spring pressure may be adjusted by means of a threaded sleeve 9<a>. Repacking of the stuffing- box f may be facilitated by providing a valve face 16, Fig. 3, on the disc a, and drawing the spindle axially to seal the orifice provided for the spindle. For this purpose, the outer end of the spindle b may be provided with a threaded hole adapted to receive a screw, the head of which abuts against a fixed cap enclosing the end of the spindle. The valve seat is in the form of a sleeve i, Fig. 1, having concentric seating seating surfaces which correspond to the different diameters of the valve faces, and to the edge of the open passage g. In a modified construction of actuating device, Fig. 12, the spring 8 bears against a loose collar 26 abutting against a shoulder 27 on the spindle. A sleeve 9<a>, enclosing the spring, screws into a fixed part 9 of the casing, and is operated bv worm gearing 29 to vary the pressure of the spring. The main valve disc is rotated by a separate worm gear 34, 35 which is operated by a key on the end of the shaft 36. In another modification, Fig. 8, the valve disc is replaced by a segment or radial arm 39, mounted on a spindle 40 provided with an inclined cam surface 41 engaging with a fixed stud 42 to move the valve away from its seat. The arm 39 usually carries only one valve face 44. In another modification, Fig. 11, the arm 39 is provided with a fixed stud 46, engaging a slot in an independent operating spindle 47 which is internally threaded to receive a screwed spindle 49 carrying a hand wheel 51. The various modifications described may be provided with an indicating device to show the position of the valve disc. The collar 26, Fig. 12, has an annular groove 52 inclined to the side faces of the collar, and engaging one end 54 of an index finger 53, so that the index finger is actuated by rotation of the collar 26. Alternatively or in conjunction with this indicating device, the collar 26 may have a number of radial holes 55, any one of which may be engaged by a stud 56 to lock the collar 26 in any position corresponding to a definite position of the valve disc.
