Abstract

Button-attaching machines. - A machine for attaching shanked buttons has a slotted throat plate, the slot having on one side a shank cavity and on the other a cavity for the clampjaw, which is connected for operation to the presser-foot lifting lever. The presser-foot is also cut away to correspond with the shank cavity. The needle-bar is laterally vibrated, to cause the needle alternately to enter and pass beyond the shank, for which purpose it is adjustably connected to a grooved pivoted segment-lever having a stud entering a groove in a cam-disk driven at one half the speed of the main shaft. The throat-plate 12 has a button receiving slot 14 with a shank cavity 15 at one side formed with a needle aperture 16 and at the other, a cavity 17 partly covered by a plate 18 beneath which passes a slide 20 to which is attached an upturned lip 22 forming a clampjaw for engaging the button. The rearward end of the slide 20 has a socket containing a pin 26, between which and the end of the socket is interposed a spring 29. Depending from the end of the slide 20, through the bedplate, is a pin 30, which enters an aperture in one end of a pivoted lever 31, the other arm 34 of which is connected to a rod 37 journaled in a bracket 38 and connected to the presser-lifting angle lever, which is operated by means of an arm projecting from a collar fixed on a rockshaft mounted beneath the table, and connected to a knee-lever or treadle. The presser-foot 44 is cut away at 45 to register with the slot 15. When the presser-foot is raised and the clamp retracted, a button is placed in the slot 14 and folded material introduced beneath the presserfoot. The treadle is then released, to allow the clamp to press the button-shank into the aperture 15 and against the cloth, and the predetermined number of stitches are made before the machine is automatically stopped. The position of the shank will determine whether or not the fastening is by blind-stitching.
