Air tubes and chambers; jackets and covers. - Relates to air - tubes for tyres having a thickened tread portion 4 moulded in a depressed form, as shown, so as to be put into a state of compression on inflation. The invention consists in the use of a stay strip 5, secured to the tread portion of the tube, which is inextensible transversely and extensible longitudinally, so that the tube may expand circumferentially while the tread portion still remains under compression transversely. The fabric of the strip 5 may be cut on the bias, or may have transverse slits; and the edges of the strip may be laced together.
