Abstract
29,652. Cadel, O. Feb. 15. Planes, construction of; propelling; steering and balancing.-In order to reduce the resistance to forward motion, screw propellers provided on aeroplane machines for stabilizing and steering are arranged in the thickness of the planes or rudders, and shutters are adapted to close the openings in the planes &c. when the propellers are not in action. Where warping planes are employed, the warping may be effected by the action of such propellers. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, front and rear propellers 4 are arranged in the supporting-planes, and a further propeller 6, disposed in a vertical plane 8, is provided for steering. The propeller shafts are mounted between disks 9 in the surface of the plane 2, the disks having openings with which openings in rotatable disks 10, 11 are adapted to register. The disks 10, 11 are automatically turned upon starting the propellers, for example, by a centrifugal governor carried by the propeller shaft. The openings are closed by the governor or by a spring. The propellers can be separately driven in either direction by the belt 14 and pulleys 15, 16 connected respectively to the bevel-wheels 21, 22.
