Solidifying liquids other than water.-In apparatus for cooling melted substances in thin layers, the thickness of the layer is determined by the distance between the cooling-surface and a distributor from which the melted material is pressed against the cooling-surface. In one form of apparatus, the distributor e is adjustably arranged on a perforated supply pipe c and discharges the melted substance against an annular vessel a, containing water cooled by a coil b. The pipe c is connected to a rotating shaft g by bars f, on which is mounted an adjustable scraper h pressed against the vessel a by a spring i. In another form of apparatus, a fixed supply pipe and distributor deposit the melted substance on the outside of an internally cooled rotary vessel. The scraper is carried by arms on the supply pipe and is pressed against the rotary vessel by a helical spring.
