Abstract

29,504. Heathcote, H. L., and Rudge- Whitworth, Ltd. Dec. 19. Coating; cleaning.-Relates to processes, of the kind described in Specification 490/08, in which solutions of hydric phosphate or hydric phosphates of iron are used to produce a protective coating upon iron or steel, and consists in the employment of a neutralizing-agent, such as washing-soda, for wholly or partly neutralizing the small amount of free acid usually present in such solutions. Instead of washing-soda, potassium carbonate or hydrate, sodium hydrate, or other substance or mixture of substances capable of rapidly and completely neutralizing free phosphoric acid in solutions of hydric phosphate or hydric phosphates of iron, may be employed. The neutralizing-substance may be added in solid, molten, or dissolved form, and either occasionally, regularly, or continuously. The iron or steel articles, before treatment with the solution, may be freed from rust by immersion in acetic acid or acetic acid vapour.
