29,362. Universal Shoe Machinery Co., Ward, A., and Gent, A. Dec. 17. Lasting.-A bed-lasting machine, of the type wherein the wiper plates h are carried towards and away from their work by means of a hand-lever m, and are caused to move in curved guides j, so as to close and reopen by means of the same lever acting through pinions k rotated by a stationary rack d and through sliding racks c connected to the wipers by links g, is provided with means for locking the lever m and the sliding plate carrying the pinions k from movement, and for moving the normally stationary rack d to give an independent crosswipe movement. The rack d is moved by a screw e, while the lever m operating the sliding plate is locked by a spring pawl engaging a rack o formed in the frame. A lever q releases the pawl. Movement of the rack d causes the wipers to close and open without longitudinal movement. A retarder is provided to hold the upper to the wipers.
