Abstract

28,489. Richards, W. E. W. Dec. 7. Utilizing waste india-rubber; plastic compositions containing india-rubber, fibres, &c.- Finely ground waste rubber is mixed with asbestos, and at the same time heated to a temperature at which the rubber is fused into the mass, namely about 300‹ C. To the plastic mass thus formed is added, preferably after cooling, a quantity of sulphur, and the mass is moulded and vulcanized, or the mass may be heated to vulcanizing temperature in the mixing-machine, and afterwards moulded in hot moulds. Rubber thus fused into asbestos becomes soluble in benzol or other solvent, and may be dissolved out, leaving the impurities, such as pieces of canvas, in the asbestos, which can be purified by cineration. When the rubber is to be recovered by solution, the asbestos may be wholly or partly replaced by other heatresisting materials such as mineral wool, or preferably materials which are also soluble in water, such as ammonium chloride.
